I have been a tax accountant for 27 years and, like you, am considering the Internet as a potential source for new business--that is, until I spoke with my partner. What she said to me really hit home: Do we really want that kind of business? Why not run an add in the Pennysaver?
Her point is well taken. Given your limited budget, set aside your shyness and consider using your 5 grand to promote yourself in person. Offer to speak at public events or even have someone else host a meet and greet cocktail party with you as the featured guest and speaker.

A recent study showed that 73% of business people turn to the internet using search engines to find services such as law firms. This number is even higher for consumers. Google is by far the number one search engine.
Create a website highlighting why your law firm is better than competition and what services it provides. Have a good web developer create the site with the appropriate meta tags so you will be found by search engines.
Sign up for Google Adwords that relate to the services you provide and are the most popular search terms. Google sales department will assist you in getting started.
Outbid everyone for those Adwords. This is a trick I learned with my own business. This is the most cost effective way of getting on the first page of a Google search. I got little or no traffic from Yahoo and they are number two.
When your law firm shows up on a search you must have very compelling words to convince the person searching to click through. Let's say your firm handles intellectual property law amongst other practices. A search for patent attorneys can be set up to show you as local. The search results in your law firm appearing on the first page. Right next to your firms name are these words. Affordable patent attorney, quick and reliable
The visitor clicks through and lands on the Patent Attorney page not the home page. This page must have very compelling words on it. The visitor must take some action. Fill out an inquiry, get some information something to capture the visitors information for follow up and the final sale to use your services.
What I just gave you is the formulae for success. I know, I use it.
Good luck and if you need help just email me. I am affordable. |

If you can identify at least one niche (something more specific than general practice), you will be better able to (a) define a target market and (b) develop a compelling message. Once you do that, here are some ideas for online marketing:
(1) Where do your most desirable clients hang out online? Post helpful messages (within your profession's ethical guidelines, of course) in online forums they frequent.
(2) Do periodic news releases about relevant legal developments that include quotes from you about impact, importance, etc. Use a service like PRNewsWire.com to distribute to news media, or distribute them locally yourself (get media list from your Chamber, and NEVER send news releases as email attachments)
(3) Make sure your web designer knows how to optimize your site for search engines and submit your site to Google, etc. He/she should spend more of his/her time (and your money) on that than on silly Flash intros, etc.
(4) Pay-per-click advertising is a good suggestion -- controlling costs is easier than it sounds. Take advantage of any free consulting help the vendor (Yahoo, Google, etc.) offers, and make sure your keywords and ad definitions include something to ensure that your ads are appearing locally, not globally (limits cost and increases relevant exposure). |

Make yourself a website and make sure it's registerd(or however you do it) so lets say i'm Joelynn McSmoelyn and I go onto whitepages.com and search for lawyers in my area and you pop up and you have a link that says official site in the directory...
on your site you can have a statistic section and you can have other stuff.... |
